11/01/06

I remember having to write papers what my parents called “reports” for the out of town ski trips when I was young and lived in New York City.  The trips were mostly to Vermont where I learned and appreciated the sport of skiing.  My parents need to be credited for my writing skills that they helped me develop during these memorable ski trips.

Little known that I would be writing for the Deaf Ski Club of Rochester.  The DSCR had its first meeting of the year at the Rochester Recreation Club for the Deaf on Friday, Oct. 6th presided by Art Zuber.  About 14 people attended the meeting.  Art shared that he recruited 31 more members at the Deaf Awareness Week exhibit.  Right now, there are 267 members however not all are skiers. Art hopes to have at least 300 members for a variety of reasons – getting possible group rates/discounts as well as sponsors.  Under consideration is having membership dues to help offset some costs such as website, postage and club rental costs.

Art introduced the Editor of the DSCR who will write and edit articles for their newsletter, website, DRN and other written materials.   Art also introduced Kathy who was in town from Vermont.  Art first met this person at a ski outing sponsored by the DSCR last winter.  He pointed out that the club is a great way to meet new people.

The DSCR received two donations, $25 each from Snow Country and Ski Company. The donations will be used towards the club expenses.  At this time, there is $870 in our funds, mostly profits from last year’s Winter Picnic. The monies are necessary to pay the website fee, postage and possibly ski instruction for this year’s event(s).  We might request the USADAA for sponsorship.

Art showed us a list of ski resorts that the DSCR might want to consider going this year.  He would like people to get information as well as sign up for trips using the DSCR website.    Jane Fluman, our group leader, is planning a trip to Gore for the month of January.  The Winter Deaf Olympics will be held during the first week of February in Salt Lake City, Utah.  The club usually plans a trip to Lake Placid for the month of February.  Sophie Bliewiess and her committee are planning a Winter Picnic for either February 17 or 24th at Webster Park. We are planning a trip to Vermont probably in March when NTID has their quarter break.  We hope to continue with our “tradition” by hosting an end of the year party at Bristol.

DSCR plans to continue to arrange events for cross-country skiers.  The best places for cross country skiing are probably Mendon Ponds, Durand Eastman and Webster Park and probably for snow shoeing, new this year.

For more information, please browse our website at
http://www.deafskiclub.org  If you wish to help organize a trip or have any questions, please contact Art at president@deafskiclub.org

Okemo Ski Trip
By Art Zuber, DSCR President

A group of fourteen skiers started on a Saturday morning for skiing.  The weather was just perfect. The temperature was around 50 degrees. Some of my buddies and I had adrenaline rush of downhill skiing at Okemo Mountain.

Okemo is the best mountain in New England. It has a wide variety of trails to fit each level of skiing or boarding. The new Jackson Gore has new great trails and there are many hight speed lifts.

Overall, I really like Okemo for its good skiing and nice town, and it would be a great place for a family ski trip. I would recommend it to most skiers.

Let's have a poll next fall.  Go to
http://deafskiclub.org to submit your ideas, and go to http://deafskiclub.org/generic01.html to browse the photo gallery.

Look forward to seeing you next winter 2007.

DSCR's end of season at Bristol

Deaf Ski Club of Rochester hosted the 3th Annual Spring Ski Party at Bristol Mountain on March 4, 2006 . A group of 10 people showed up for this gathering. Sorenson Communications, Inc.provided pizza and drinks.  I hired a ski instructor named Audrey Schell. She was our club's first deaf ski instructor with many years of alpine and xc-skiing experience.  We had a good time together toward the end of this winter season.  Next year DSCR will provide a few ski lessons with ski instructors (deaf/interpreter) for FREE. Need more information, please contact at

I would like to share with you about this winter season – what happened to this season?  I think Mother Nature forgot that is it winter - a lack of snow.  It caused DSCR's ski events including xc-ski events to be cancelled due to weird weathers. Message from Art Zuber, DSCR President

Winter Picnic Day and Auction Night!

Our First Annual Winter Picnic at Parkview lodge in Webster Park was the perfect spot. The weather was so nice that we only needed to put on light jackets/sweaters. There was no snow on the trails. Some of those took the hiking instead of xc-skiing. Great Outing!

First of all, I wanted to extend a HUGE thanks to all of the donations from Sears, Roebucks & Company, Wegmans, TGI Friday, Red Lobster, Bally Total Fitness, Snow Country, Tops, Olive Garden, Brook House, Applebee's, Chili's, UNO Chicago Grill, Thrift Store, Chase Pikitins, and Dunkin Dounts. We collected over $650.00.

Second of all, I wanted to say “Thank you very much” to my committee who were willing to give up their time to volunteer and donated some food for our DSCR's fundraising. Here is a list of committee: Kathleen Fisher, chairperson, Nancy Cantabene, co-chairperson, Sophie Bleiweiss, Josephine Sherwood, Kathy Greenawalt, and Barbara DiGiovanni. They did a wonderful job for this special event!

We rented a lodge room with wood fireplace. It was nice and comfortable for 45 people who showed up. They wanted to donate the money to DSCR's fund. We thank so much to John & Rosemary Eutics and David Trachtenberg for their help!

The dinner buffet was good. Most people enjoyed the buffet especially the Spare Ribs! We provided many desserts from donation. Barbara Carlile donated the cheesecake bars. Her kindness was much appreciated! Kathy Fisher made a decorative sheet cake with a logo and name of the “Deaf Ski Club of Rochester”. We thanked her for the wonderful support!

After dinner, we gave away about $132.00 worth of the gift certificates and cards for 15 door prizes from those donations. They enjoyed winning the gift certificates from the drawing.

After the door prizes, we asked for donations for our fundraising. We have other about $223.00 of the gift certificates/gift cards. This auction was new to us. We were not sure if it works or not much to ask for a bid on these gift certificates/cards. We were so surprise many of those interested in bidding on these items and already sold them all.

Then next last one of the big auction was for 3 Sears Craftsman Tools: 10'' Table Saw, Work Floodlight, and 4 Drawer Tool Box. We amazed to get highest of the bidding and sold them easily! The auction was so awesome and it helped increase our funds faster!  Our kudos to Nancy Cantabene who suggested this wonderful auction idea to us and being so positive that it became a success for DSCR!  We earned over $375.

Why does DSCR need to fundraise when the membership is free?  How can DSCR pay for DSCR Website cost, domain fee, lodge rental, supplies, ski instructor, and etc?  DSCR has volunteers who worked hard on providing winter experience but these things that we mentioned do not come free, unfortunately.  That's why we ask your help and your support to raise funds for good cause. DSCR is looking for your help and join us having good times together. DSCR's purpose is to have good times and getting together with friends - NO Politics involved!

Our club's goal is to have a new logo design, letterhead for the donation letters, and it's possible that we might hire a ski instructor for Spring Skiing Party this year. The rest of the fund will be used for latter expenses.

Currently, DSCR has 225 members and recently added 5 new members!  We've grown in the last 2 years and conitnue to gorw fast!

Hard of hearing, interpreters, and hearing students who are motivated to learn Amercian Sign Language - You're welcome to join our club!

Thanks to DeafRochester.com and Deaftimes.com for distributing this event to the deaf community in Rochester.

See you next 2nd Winter Picnic to keep your eye on DSCR Website at http://deafskiclub.org It's still FREE Membership as always!

A note from Art Zuber, DSCR President

Deaf Ski Club of Rochester wants to send a message, "A Huge Thank You" to the people who made donations to our club.  Here is a list of the donations since October 21, 2005 meeting:

Mark's Pizzeria from Greece area donated 3 sheets of pizza.
Pontillo's Pizzeria from Greece area donated two large pies of pizza.
Tops from Greece area donated one sheet of pizza.
The skiers loved pizza!

DSCR really appreciate the Deaf/HOH community's support and help.  Our first meeting at RRCD was successful, about 25 people showed up. The meeting talked how the club began since establishment in November 2003. sharing the information news and providing feedback to the club.  Fourteen people signed up to join our membership after the meeting.  That's wonderful news for DSCR.  I was so grateful to RRCD President Steve Debolis for providing us a room for the general meeting.

Wow!  Fall is almost gone, can you believe it???  Before you know it, we have a great ski season coming up soon. It has already snowed in Canada.  You better start tuning up your skies and working on the old body. Your trip leaders are working on some great trips.

The summer have not gotten much rain but does that mean this winter, we should have much more snow than before?  I hope so, let's pray and have a great snow season 2005–2006.

DSCR is pleased to announce that our old website has been moved to a new website.  DSCR has it's own domain name and web mail. Please visit at http://deafskiclub.org for more details.  Everyone is welcome!  So, join our club to meet the people from coast to coast and the best part is it's free to become a member.  The purpose of the ski club is to have FUN and make new friends!  Our current membership is 187 and could possibly reach over 200 members this winter season.  Bring your friends, join our club – the more, the merrier!

To the Deaf Ski Club of Rochester,

Hi, This is Lisa Tempesta, Director of Snowboarding for the US Deaf Ski & Snowboard Association (USDSSA).  I am writing on behalf of the USDSSA to find out your interest in cohosting an event with us next winter season. USDSSA wants to encourage more deaf skiers/snowboarders to become involved in the Deaflympics by providing race training opportunities.  Therefore, we are investigating ways to host a series of ski and snowboard race clinics at four different locations, including Rochester, across the country next winter season.   Would you be interested in cohosting an event with us?  Here is what we propose:

Deaf Ski Club of Rochester - hosts a deaf ski day at a mountain of their choice.  Your organization makes the arrangements with the mountain for discount lift tickets, post-ski event such as hot chocolate and cookies in a meeting room starting at 3:30 pm, assists with racer clinic registration for USDSSA, advertise the ski event and races.

USDSSA - hosts an afternoon race clinic for deaf youth and young adults at your ski event.  USDSSA will provide the coach(es), work with the mountain staff to arrange for a practice slope, racing gates, and timing equipment.  USDSSA will cover expenses incurred for the use of the slope.

Please advise if you would like to work with us.  Also, if you can, please advise the number of young deaf skiers and snowboarders that would have an interest in racing.  USDSSA hopes to attract at least 16 racers in your area.  Below is a sample letter I've been sending to the racing staff at ski resorts we hope to host our racing clinic.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Respectfully,
Lisa Tempesta

Dear Racing Department Staff:

We are writing on behalf of the US Deaf Ski & Snowboard Association (USDSSA).  We are a non-profit organization which promotes race training for young deaf and hard of hearing adults. We would like to find out if it is possible to arrange a one day racing clinic for our deaf and hard of hearing skiers and snowboarders in the 2005-2006 Winter Season at your ski resort.
We have a try-out event at Telluride, CO in March 2006 Athletes that make the team will represent the US at the Deaflympics in 2007.  We want to help skiers/snowboarders to get ready for the tryouts. We would like to have athletes to meet at your ski resort. We have certified coaches who are volunteering to provide morning training 9 am – Noon, one Saturday a month from December to February 2006.

Because we have limited funds available, we are asking if it is possible to reserve a slope for that time period at no cost or a reduced rate. Our athletes and coaches will buy lift tickets, and they might also rent skis or snowboards.  We could use a NASCAR slopes if you have one, and would like to borrow gates and timing equipment if it is possible.

Please respond by email: Lisa Tempesta (snowboarding@usdssa.org) and Senda Benaissa (alpine@usdssa.org).

Look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you.

USDSSA Deaf Ski Week Convention
Telluride, Colorado
March 12-19, 2006:

The U.S. Deaf Ski & Snowboard (USDSSA) Association is hosting the 2006 Deaf Ski Week during March 12-19, 2006 in Telluride, CO.  USDSSA is a non-profit recreational and competitive organization of hard-of-hearing and deaf skiers, snowboarders and cross country skiers.  The convention is for everyone including non-deaf skier/snowboarders, adult, teenager, child, and so on.  For more information, go to www.deafski.com

USDSSA will be hosting a try-out event during the convention.  All hard-of-hearing and deaf individuals with a hearing loss of 55dB or greater in the better ear are eligible to qualify for a spot on the US Ski, Snowboard and Cross Country Ski Teams.  Athletes who make the team will represent the US at the Deaflympics in 2007.  The International Olympic Committee sanctions the Deaflympic Games.  USDSSA’s parent organization, the USA Deaf Sports Federation is recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee as having oversight of international deaf sports.  USDSSA is also recognized by the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association.

Tryouts are for the ski and snowboard teams.  Cross country skiers will be selected based on the number of FIS points accumulated.  The team tryouts at Telluride is a tremendous opportunity to improve your skiing or snowboarding skills, meet other athletes like yourself and be a part of a team!  No previous racing experience is necessary for the Telluride Tryouts but strong skiing and snowboarding skills are required.  USDSSA will train athletes how to race through the gates during the tryouts!  Half-pipe skills are strongly desirable for those that are interested in competing in the half-pipe.  If you are interested in learning more about the team try-outs, please go to the USDSSA website (www.usdssa.org) and click on the Racing menu option (or go directly to:  http://usdssa.org/Races.html).  Please email Lisa Tempesta you have additional questions about the snowboarding races: snowboarding@usdssa.org, Senda Benaissa about the skiing portion: alpine@alpine@usdssa.org and Ed Ingham on cross country skiing: president@usdssa.org.

President's Message:

The club is successful with snow sport activities and we're experimenting with growth in a few areas that we feel will be positive for the club as a whole. Everyone was very pleased to hear that our membership is already up to 187 members. That's pretty good considering it's still the beginning of the new season. Let's hope our membership increases with new skiers/boarders/xc-skiers that will realize what this club has to offer.

The Deaf Ski Club of Rochester provides fun, adventure, friends and of course, skiing! We will run approximately ten trips per winter season. Three trips take you out East to great places such as Gore Mtn, Whiteface Mtn, and other site in Vermont.

The club is a great way to meet new people while getting in some excellent snow skiing!

Visitors are always welcome!

It's a FREE membership.  We have skiers of all abilities as well as non-skiers waiting to meet you.

Come join us for the FUN!

Information regarding club activities is circulated via email. Information such as current ski schedule or specific trip particulars can also be found on this web site, or contact any one of the club officers.

A message for USDSSA Newsletter

First of all I want to send a heartfelt "Thank You" to Lisa Tempesta for asking for an article about the Deaf Ski Club of Rochester, New York. It's my pleasure to provide a summary of the DSCR history.

Unhappy that there were no groups within Rochester that catered to the deaf skiing community, I played around with the idea of starting an organization myself. At my request, the people at DeafRochester.com and Deaftimes.com ran a survey of the public which helped me gauge interest in such an organization. Over the course of the survey, I received many positive comments. The results of the poll are apparent now: We have 183 members just after 17 months of existence!

The DSCR's primary purpose is for people to have FUN. I encourage those who are interested in skiing/snowboarding/xc-skiing to join to make new friends.A fortunate side effect of having so many friends to make is that DSCR is now entitled to various discount rates for lift tickets, lodging, etc. Please visit our DSCR Website for further information.  See the link below.

The USDSSA's program is really important for our country. Those people who can help you and your child/ren learning how to ski and it possibly leads you into the Deaf World Games, now known as the Deaflympics. I look forward to going to the Deaflympicsto support to our Deaf USA Competitors. Come join and support the USDSSA and the Deaflympics.

The DSCR is looking to fill some administrative positions!  Positions now open are secretary, newsletter editor, flyer designer, photographer, trip coordinator and trip leaders. If you are interested in taking any of these positions, please contact me at roseart@rochester.rr.com or videophone number: 585.723.1442.

DSCR 2005 Ski Season has come to an end, and I hope that all of you who participated in our ski trips had a great time!  I want to whole heartedly thank this year's trip leaders, Kathleen Morgan-Doskos from Connecticut,Tony Manhanski from New Jersey, and Kevin Taylor from New York for organizing the trip to Killington in Vermount.

About 31 DSCR members traveled to Killington which has seven mountains including the Pico Mountain to partake in 2 days ofskiing.  We had skiing spring temperatures for Friday, fresh snow about six inches for Saturday, and perfect day for Sunday before we returned.  Some of those skiers were arrived early on Thursday night, they enjoyed early morning skiing on Friday. We had great conditions - snow, sun, and warm.  The Holiday Inn at Rutland, Vermont was great and had both indoor pool and hot jazzuci.  Friday evening was to meet some deafies at Applebee Restaurant and had nice chatting each other. Friday night into Saturday morning we received a new bedcover of snow (4-6 inches)  All of us were thrilled to ski on the slopes and challenge with snow conditions.  We were some advanced skiers, intermediate skiers and novice skiers.  Some of us already lost the track that we were supposed to meet the deafies at one of those ski lodges for lunch gathering. - Killington is HUGE, not the same as Bristol or Gore Mountains. Killington has 81 trails and 23 lifts and over 50 miles of skiing and riding lifts!

Saturday evening, Kathleen reserved two long tables for deaf group at Three Tomatoes Trattoria.  The food was so splendid!  We enjoyed eating and chatting.  After eating, we returned to our hotel for another socializing at bar room.  Ellen Krueger who is a representative for Sprint VRS Relay, provided tickets for drinks and a shortpresentation about the D-Link Videophone for Relay Service.  It's prefect place for relaxing and socializing and making new friends. The most people came from Vermont.  Some of us have not met them before.  All of us had a wonderful time for a special evening.  All of us would like to meet again annually. We want to extend a hearty thanks to Elena Krueger and SprintVRS for providing the drinks for social night.  We hope they will continue to support our club annually.

Sunday was another great day on the slopes.  The lifts lines were not bad and the snow was freshly groomed. Weather in the mountains was clear and sunny. We kept going skiing on the slopes before we returned.  Some of them left in the early morning and the rest of us left after lunch for home.  Most of us were tired and two day of skiingis just enough and satisfied with our ski trip!  We had a great group of people, which always makes for a great trip.

Killington was chosen by a DSCR poll for 2004-2005 season. The DSCR would do another poll to select one of ski resorts in Vermont for next year.  The DSCR was a successful to host for Killington Ski Trip since we asked for their polls.  Thank you so much for your input.

The last day at Spring Ski Party!

The DSCR hosted a successful 2nd Annual Spring Ski Party at Bristol. There were 17 ski and non-ski participants.  Kathy Fisher who brought a sheet cake to share with our club for Ritchie's 50 birthday. DSCR provided the free drinks. It was a nice celebration. We want to thank Kathy and Ritchie Fisher for providing us a delicious cake. We had fun skiing on the slopes until 10pm. Some of us enjoyed the panoramic view of the Bristol Hills. The conditions were very good.  See two photos of DSCR group. - Avid Skiers and Ski Supporters.  Check out the DSCR's website at http://deafskiclub.org - there are more photos in there!  Come join us for next year's 3rd Annual Spring Ski party - the more the merrier!

Now for the winter 2004/2005 season, DSCR had more success as a club.  Many faces met new faces and made new friends.  Of course, to ski on the slopes with friends was thrilling.

The Deaf Ski Club of Rochester hosted their Second Annual Whiteface Mountain Ski Outing on the weekend of February 18-20th, 2005. Most of the participants came from Rochester to brave the Whiteface Mountain which boasts the greatest vertical drop in the east of 3,430 feet.

This event coincides with the 25th Anniversary Celebration of 1980 Olympic Winter Games including the legendary “Miracle on Ice” hockey game in 1980 when the U.S. Hockey team won the gold medal.

The deaf participants enjoyed walking around the Olympic Center which hosted numerous events including Stars on Ice, concerts, youth and adult hockey tournaments, and figure skating championships right in the heart of the Lake Placid Village.

An 80 Minute Party with fireworks took place at the Mirror Lake beach where deaf participants watched in awe. Following the fireworks, the rest of the group went to Mister Mike’s Pizzeria to relax and unwind after a long day of skiing and touring of the Lake Placid village.

Art Zuber, President of the Deaf Ski Club extended his gratitude to Sorenson Media for the sponsorship of their organization and the pizza party at Lake Placid, NY.

    Ski Trip to Lake Placid

Lake Placid is a perfect spot for any annual deaf gathering.

First of all I want to thank Anthony DiGiovannio who provided free pizza, drinks, and big cookies sponsored by Sorenson VRS. We enjoyed to eat pizza. Splendid!!! DSCR hope that he and Sorenson VRS will continue to support our club and help bring in more skiers by continuing to provide pizza and drinks.

Last year, we only had three skiers that showed up, but this year, 21 skiers came which meant we were successful in hosting this event.  I have pictures of this trip for your browsing pleasures on our DSCR Website at www.deafskiclub.org  For next year 2005-2006, DSCR will need people to help with children's activities, getting group rate, photography, and etc. If you are interested in joining a committee, contact Art @ president@deafskiclub.org  Membership is FREE!

After a 5 hour trip to Ski Whiteface Lodge, I met Tom Kelly from New York and had lunch with him. At nightfall, we looked for other deafies at Lake Placid Pub and Brewery at 8 pm. Browsing around a small brewery display through a window. We talked about ales we would drink. The brewery had 7 flavors of ales from light brown to dark brown.  Other deafies had not yet showed but we enjoyed our dining at the restaurant.

Early Saturday morning after breakfast, we headed out to the Whiteface Lodge where we finally met Kevin Taylor and his son at the ticket windows.  Soon, we saw more of our deaf friends, the DiGiovannis and their kids, Fred Chatterson, and Joyce Ellen.  The four of us grown-ups took a gondola ride to Little Whiteface Peak and Whiteface Summit. Fred was brave to ski with us since he has not skied much. Tom skied very well without his ski poles which he forgot to bring.  After skiing, we lunched together at a ski lodge where we were to meet other deafies.  Few minutes later, George Postlethwait came. The weather in the morning was perfect with blue skies, a little wind and we all had fun skiing that day.

After skiing, we met again for pizza and drinks. After dinner, most of the families went back to their hotel, and some of us went to Lake Placid Village to see Toboggan's Run on the Mirror Lake. It was nice to see how fast they rode the toboggan to the mirror lake from a ramp. Then we went to the Bowling Alley and other place to play the darts. We had a lot of fun!

On Sunday morning, the children with their parents went to a ski lodge for children known as Kid's Campus.

I really enjoyed seeing all of our deaf friends and their families at Whiteface Ski Lodge. It was great to ski and eat with them especially with the children! I look forward to seeing them again, and hopefully, more of you from everywhere to ski with us.  The more, the merrier!

Whiteface Trip - Deaf Ski Gatheriing!

Deaf Ski Club of Rochester is providing a trip to Whiteface near Lake Placid.  A vacation to lake placid would be a wonderful way to spend a weekend.. With so much to do between Whiteface mountain, Lake Plavid village, the Olympic Venues a vacation would never run short on activity.

First things first.  When you first see the Whiteface Mountain, you understand it's name, and remain amazed at it's size.  It's really huge.  The figures speak for themselves; it has a 3,430 feet vertical drop, the biggest on the East Coast.  It's also the same mountain that was used in tghe winter Olympic Games of 1932 and 1980.  Whiteface is really impressive!

Whiteface Mountain is located about 7 miles from Lake Placid, New York, in a town called Wilmington.  With nearly 75 trails, Whiteface is the largest ski resort in the Adirondacks. Snow making and grooming, along with an abundance of real snow, give skiers and snowboarders great conditions to ski or snowboard.

The mountain is nice, the views of the Adirondacks are spectacular, and the trails are interesting and challenging.  Skyward is really a thrill to ski.......challenges my 47 year old body.  With virtually no lines a skier can rack up a lot of mileage in a day.  This mountain offers several lifts and a high speed gondola. The gondola is enclosed with heat and cushioned seats. The gondola is very nice I  have seen.

I recommend this resort to all skiers from beginners to experts.  It's just a fun mountain to ski on.

Need further information about lodging and ski lift ticket, please visit our DSCR Website at http://deafskiclub.tripod.com

When you you sign up, it would be helpful to get a deaf gathering at Best Western/Whiteface lodge.  Look forward to meeting you on the slopes soon.

It's snowing!  Extend your holiday break and come join us on the slopes!!!

The Deaf Ski Club of Rochester is providing a trip to Gore Mountain.  The ski event date will be on January 14 - 16, 2005.  You can make your own reservation via Hotel.com that I already set up the program on the DSCR Website for you and everyone too.  Stay for 2 nights over a weekend.  Please come visit at our website to get more information.  See the links below.

Gore Mountain is located in the Adirondack Mountains of northeastern New York. There's a vertical drop of 2,100 and over 300 skiable acres. It is a pretty big mountain, with nice long runs that make for enjoyable skiing. It's an intermediate's delight with 60 percent of the runs just made for cruising. They have a good variety of skiing slopes, a good number of lifts and good conditions usually. Don't forget they have snow tubing during the night.

Snow Tubing is becoming a popular sport and so much fun for families!

If you need a carpool please let me know soon as possible.

Look forward to seeing you on the slopes next weekend and have a safe trip,

First of all I would like to say “Thank You” to Susan Demers- Postlethwait and her group who established for the Deaf Awareness Week under the Regional Center Independence Living. (RLIC)  It was a great opportunity for me to represent for the Deaf Ski Club of Rochester to the deaf community. Susan and her group provided me a free booth including a long table with a white tablecloth and two chairs. It was a great opportunity for me to meet new faces and make new friends. Many people were interested in joining our club. I already collected about 30 participants which is wonderful news and club as well.  Thanks again to Susan and her group.

Deaf Ski Club of Rochester Membership is growing

We, the committee would like to share with you about the organization of the Deaf Ski Club of Rochester. (DSCR)

Are you getting excited about the upcoming season?  Fall is nearly over and with each passing day we draw closer to the most wonderful time of the year:  Ski Season!

The primary purpose of the Deaf Ski Club of Rochester for the Northeast is to provide a place for skiers of all types and skill levels to make new friends. We currently have 88 active members and are always interested in growing.  The ski members are from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hamsphire, Canada, Alaska, and Florida.  Awesome!

That’s wonderful news for our first year of the DSCR Website!  Please visit our new website at http://deafskiclub.tripod.com for more information. Don't forget to sign up for our membership / mailing list! Thank you for your interest!

Let’s explain more about our club, we will provide some of the planned activities this year.  We would like to keep the Traditional Schedule for Gore Mountain, Whiteface Mountain, and other site in Vermont:

The second week of January (Martin Luther King weekend) we will host a gathering at Gore Mountain.  The reason is the people who need a “Break Away” from work.

All the trails and lifts should be open. We can use the Access Pass for ski lift ticket for FREE!  If you don't have an access pass, you can click on the linkage of “Access Pass" in our webpage to get more information.

Arrangements will be made to get a group discount for hotel accommodation including complimentary continental breakfast, indoor swimming pool, and jazzucci, etc.

The third week of February will see the DSCR at Whiteface for President’s Holiday Weekend.  Why do I choose this month for Whiteface Mountain? Because I know the Whiteface has been the best ski season in the middle week of February.  I want to see opening all the trails on a top of two mountains for the people who are the aggressive skiers. Whiteface has many challenging trails and will push  your ability to the limit!

Arrangements will be made to get a group discount for hotel accommodations as same as above.

The month of March for Vermont Ski Area is unplanned at the moment. We would like to take a trip to Vermont, but we will need to wait and determine how many people are interested. Hopefully with enough people participating, we will be able to charter a bus thus helping reduce the cost.

If you are interested in going, please sign up via DSCR Website and e-mail me if you have any comments.

As for Bristol Mountain, we encourage you using the Wegmans Shoppers Club card that would be helpful to save your money for ski evening on Saturdays.  Many of us get together almost every weekend at Bristol Mountain. If you sign up for the "Weekly Update" on the DSCR website you will be sent a list of the other people who will be attending the upcoming event.

I hope this article helps you joining and supporting our DSCR Program. That’s your opportunity to get a ski gathering such as social fun, meeting new people and making new friends – the more the merrier!

Remember that new members are always welcome and most importantly: Membership is FREE.

Hope to see you on the slopes soon!

    Have a safe trip!

    02/19/04

I would like to share news with you all.  As you know, I myself love skiing same as everyone else.  Smile!  I believe you all would like to hear my commentary about our ski trip to Whiteface last Sunday morning.

The three of us were only able to go to Whiteface.  We knew that the sub-zero weather were on Sunday and Monday.  We werent worried about it.  We felt comfortable in this kind of weather unlike a snowstorm.  The first day of skiing was great and perfect with weather.  The second day of skiing was colder a little bit up there at Whiteface Mt.  The third day of skiing was the best one of all.  We were so happy and much enjoyed to ski most of all trails especially the Upper Skyward.  The snow and ski conditions were great.  Unbelievable!

We were very lucky to have that dates for our pleasure skiing.  Whats more, we were surprised there were not many people on the slopes during the Presidents Day Holiday Week.  We took advantage of it due to the sub-zero.  Kevin Taylor, Tim Maloney, and I were fortunately skiing together.

The other 8 out of 17 (2 families) skiers were cancelled due to the sub-zero.  No problem.  The other 6 people were not show up at Best Western/Whiteface lodge.  I had no responses from them since we stayed at hotel and meet at ski shop before we leave for skiing.  We wish we could have you joining us in skiing....the more, the merrier!

Don't worry that you missed your opportunity to be with us.  The Deaf Ski Club of Rochester (DSCR) will carry on the ski events for you and your family, and even your friends beyond the years.

I appreciate your time to read this and participate us skiing someday in the near future.

    Warmest Regards,
    Arthur Zuber

    01/30/04

In Rochester, we need a deaf ski club to provide good and fun social gatherings plus learning opportunities for deaf skiers.  Now, we have new club called, "Deaf Ski Club of Rochester." The club installed new web pages; this tool allows more people to get know more about the club itself and make more friends!

Hat off to Art Zuber for he did a great job for the club including developing web pages. Outstanding job, Art!

I look forward to see you on the slope (for downhill skiing) or in the woods (for xc skiing).

    Enjoy the winter sports!
    Keith Worek

I am hosting DSCR's Holiday Valley skiing outing on January 31st.  Join me and we will have *F*U*N*!

My parents met each other skiing through mutual friends and got married afterward.  They raised nine kids.  They made sure we, the children, know how to ski.  You can see why I am a lifelong skier.  I used to ski at Bluemont in Yorkshire, NY. (now closed)

Currently I am a volunteer instructor in the Lounsbury Adaptive Program.  It is specialized program for physically and mentally challenge including equipment, lesson and lift ticket.  Check out http://members.rogers.com/lounsbury-program/  For the 2003/2004 season, I am committed to Holiday Valley ski resort.  Hope you can find me there.  Feel free to send me an e-mail at wadannels@yahoo.com

In summary, DSCR is a fabulous organization for anyone to join because it gives a wonderful opportunity for an individual to have ski networking with other person who also support Deaf culture.  Hey, sign up if you haven't and do not miss this rare opportunity!

    Have a wonderful snowflake season.
    Cheers, Wendy Dannels
